Ciuleandra is a traditional folk melody, passed down orally through generations. Because of this, it does not have a single official performer. Instead, it lives through village musicians, professional folk orchestras, national ensembles, modern reinterpretations.

Although the melody is traditional, one of the most influential interpretations was by Maria Tănase, Romania’s most celebrated folk singer. Her recording helped popularize Ciuleandra internationally and cemented its status as a cultural emblem. Later, professional ensembles such as Ciocârlia National Ensemble, Rapsodia Română, Doina Gorjului continued to perform and refine the piece, bringing it to stages worldwide.

About the Group

Ciuleandra is the official Romanian folk dance group of the Romanian Canadian Cultural Association of Calgary. The ensemble was formed after many years of folk dance classes offered through the Romanian School in the Prairie program, where children and youth learned the foundations of Romanian traditional dance, rhythm, and cultural expression.

Today, Ciuleandra brings together passionate dancers who proudly represent Romanian folklore, traditional costumes, and ancestral customs at cultural festivals, community celebrations, and dedicated folklore events across Calgary and the surrounding region.

Our Mission

Ciuleandra exists to preserve, celebrate, and share the richness of Romanian folk traditions with the wider Canadian community. Through dynamic performances, authentic choreography, and traditional attire, the group showcases the diversity of Romania’s regional dances—from energetic circle dances to elegant, lyrical steps rooted in centuries‑old customs.

Performances & Community Presence

The group is regularly invited to perform at:

  • Multicultural festivals and community events

  • Heritage and folklore celebrations

  • Cultural showcases and international days

  • RCCAC‑hosted events and Romanian national holidays

Each performance highlights the beauty of Romanian folk culture and strengthens the cultural bridge between Romanian heritage and Calgary’s multicultural landscape.

The Meaning of “Ciuleandra” in Romanian Tradition

The name Ciuleandra carries deep cultural significance in Romania.

  • It is the title of one of the most famous and beloved Romanian folk dances, known for its gradually increasing tempo and captivating, hypnotic rhythm.

  • Traditionally, Ciuleandra symbolizes joy, vitality, and communal unity, as dancers move together in a circle that becomes faster and more exhilarating with each repetition.

  • The dance is also associated with festive gatherings, weddings, and village celebrations, where it embodies the spirit of togetherness and the exuberance of Romanian rural life.

By choosing this name, the Calgary ensemble honors a dance that is both iconic and emblematic of the Romanian soul.

Roots in the Romanian School in the Prairie

Ciuleandra was born from the long‑standing folk dance classes offered within the Romanian School in the Prairie, a program dedicated to preserving Romanian language, culture, and traditions. Many of the group’s dancers began as students in these classes, learning not only choreography but also the cultural stories, symbolism, and regional identities behind each dance.

Cultural Identity Through Costume

The group performs in authentic Romanian folk costumes, representing various regions of Romania. These garments—embroidered shirts, woven belts, skirts, vests, and traditional footwear—are essential elements of the performance, reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of Romanian heritage.

A Living Expression of Romanian Heritage

Ciuleandra continues to grow as a vibrant cultural ambassador for the Romanian community in Calgary. Through movement, music, and tradition, the group keeps Romanian folklore alive and accessible for new generations, while sharing its beauty with audiences across Alberta.

Performances & Community Engagement

Ciuleandra is delighted to bring the beauty of Romanian folklore to stages across Calgary and beyond. The group is available to perform at festivals, cultural events, exhibitions, community celebrations, parades, and dedicated folklore showcases. With vibrant choreography, authentic traditional costumes, and a deep commitment to preserving Romanian heritage, Ciuleandra offers an engaging and memorable performance for audiences of all ages.
